Cleveland Indians The Cleveland Indians are a professional baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They are in the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. Since 1994 they have played in Progressive Field (formerly Jacobs Field). The team's spring training facility is in Winter Haven, Florida, but will move to Goodyear, Arizona in 2009. The "Indians" name originates from a request by the club owner to decide a new name, following the 1914 season. In reference to the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves), the media chose "the Indians". They are nicknamed "the Tribe" and "the Wahoos". Which is a reference to the mascot taht appears in the team's logos, Chief Wahoo.

STRANDED AT FIRST BASE About 40 percent of the players in Major League Baseball are black, Hispanic or Asian, and the sport is seen as a leading example of diversity, yet a curious disparity has emerged in a corner of the game. Among baseball's 30 teams, only 23 percent of the third-base coaches are members of minorities, compared with 67 percent of its first-base coaches. The disparity has existed for decades but it is now about twice as large as it was in 1990, based on an analysis by The New York Times.

Far From Cellar, San Diego Tops List of Buyers Before the season, conventional wisdom said the San Diego Padres would be active leading to the nonwaiver trading deadline. The wisdom was correct, but in a way few people expected. The Padres reached Saturday's deadline with the best record in the National League, at 60-41 before their game at Petco Park. In the last three days, they added two veteran hitters without losing any pitchers from the majors' stingiest staff.

YANKEES 11, INDIANS 4; The Yankees Keep Winning, As Rodriguez Keeps Waiting CLEVELAND -- Hot dogs cost a dollar on Thursday night, which could be one reason why the largest crowd since the Indians' home opener flocked to Progressive Field. Another, this one more plausible, involved the desire to see a singular event, a home run slugged by a certain third baseman, before the Yankees skipped town for a more meaningful series against Tampa Bay. Sliding headfirst, Rodriguez wrapped his hands around the bag, ripping it from the ground, and for a moment he lay there on his back with the base in his hands. The longer it takes for Rodriguez to hit his 600th career home run, the more his priorities may be shifting. ''I thought the milestone was doubles,'' Rodriguez said, ''so I took the base with me.''

BASEBALL ROUNDUP; Bullpen Door Gives Peralta Odd Homer Jeanmar Gomez and Jhonny Peralta were a bit breathless in the Cleveland Indians' clubhouse -- one from delight, the other from exhaustion. METS 6, INDIANS 4; Mets Find Solution For Road Problems CLEVELAND -- The American League may be considered superior to the National League, but the Mets found its flabby underbelly in Baltimore and Cleveland. Playing those two struggling A.L. clubs has been the salve the Mets needed to reverse their confounding road difficulties. First, the Mets swept the Orioles in Baltimore last weekend, then earned a sweep here, beating the Indians three times, including a 6-4 victory in Thursday night's series finale.

METS 7, INDIANS 6; Mets' Hitters Finally Make Things a Little Easier for Santana CLEVELAND -- On a night when Johan Santana was not at his best, he finally got the run support he had been missing for much of the season. Santana gave up four runs in the first four innings, but after he found a better rhythm, the Mets' offense came alive and took advantage of several mistakes by the opposition to give Santana the kind of cushion he has rarely enjoyed this season. The Mets beat the Cleveland Indians, 7-6, Tuesday night to give Santana his first victory since he beat the Yankee...
