Los Angeles Dodgers The Los Angeles Dodgers are a Major League Baseball team based in Los Angeles, California, USA. The team is in the Western Division of the National League. Established in 1883, the team originated in Brooklyn, New York, where it was known as the Brooklyn Dodgers, before moving to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. Brooklyn was home to outstanding baseball clubs in the mid-1850s. Eight of 16 participants in the first convention were from Brooklyn, including the Atlantic, Eckford and Excelsior clubs that combined to dominate play for most of the 1860s. Brooklyn helped make baseball commercial, as the locale of the first paid admission games, a series of three all star contests matching New York and Brooklyn in 1858. Brooklyn also featured the first two enclosed baseball grounds, the Union Grounds and the Capitoline Grounds; enclosed, dedicated ballparks then went from amateurism to professionalism. SPORTS OF THE TIMES; The Yankees' World Series Ring Leaders For all of the domination by the Yankees in previous World Series, have you ever wondered which of the team's players were on the most winning teams? Being a teammate of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera certainly helped, but dozens of other players contributed to the franchise's 26-13 record in World Series. SPORTS OF THE TIMES; In October 1950, Yankees Pitching Paced a Sweep If the natural nickname for this rare Yankees-Phillies pairing is the Amtrak World Series, consider that when these two teams met in October for the only other time, in 1950, Amtrak didn't even exist. Trains connecting New York and Philadelphia that year rolled along the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, more than two decades before Amtrak was Amtrak. Consider that in 1950, only five years after the end of World War II, the Yankees had won only 12 of their record 26 Series titles and the now-gutted...

He was celebrating a second consecutive trip to the World Series, a rarity in this era of baseball parity. ''This doesn't happen to teams very often,'' Lidge, the Philadelphia closer, said. ''It just doesn't.''
