Philadelphia Phillies

Home
Philadelphia Phillies The Philadelphia Phillies are a Major League Baseball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The Phillies are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. From 2004 to the present, the Phillies have played their home games at Citizens Bank Park in the South Philadelphia section of the city. The organization is tied with the San Francisco Giants as the fifth-oldest team in the majors, behind the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals. The "Phillies" name originates as a shortened version of the "Philadelphias", as the convention at the time was to call the team by their home city. They are nicknamed "the Fightins' ", or "The Phils". It is a convention in 'Phillies' culture to substitute "F" with "Ph" in various terms or names. One of the 19th century "Classic Eight" National League franchises, the club was founded in Philadelphia in 1883 as the "Quakers". The team adopted "Phillies" the following year.

LEADING OFF; The Shift Is On in Baseball When the hot stove league finally caught fire on Monday -- baseball's way of buying its way back into the sportsheadlines -- and the smoke began to clear, a few things quickly become apparent: 1. In acquiring one ace (Roy Halladay) and trading another (Cliff Lee), the Phillies have squashed the idea that they are the new Yankees. If they were, they would have stockpiled all the available aces, offered them contracts twice what anyone else offered, immediately hiked ticket prices and found a cu...

TV SPORTS; Yankees' 27th Title Proves A Big Draw In the 13 years since the Yankees started to play regularly in the World Series again, their viewership has never exceeded the 25.2 million average in 1996, when they beat the Atlanta Braves. Pick your reasons: the novelty of the Yankees playing in the late fall, the still-potent world of broadcast TV, the matchup of major markets or the appearance that year of the ''Seinfeld'' episode in which George Steinbrenner craves calzones. The next best viewership was the 23.7 million for the Yankees' s...

YANKEES 7, PHILLIES 3; Back on Top, Yankees Add A 27th Title A sliver of time for other teams is an epoch for the Yankees, who define themselves by championships. For eight seasons, they led the majors in victories, payroll and drama. They built a ballpark, created a network and expanded their brand around the globe. But they did not win the World Series. Now they have done it. There is a 27th jewel in the Yankees' crown and a peaceful, easy feeling across their empire. The Yankees captured their first title since 2000, humbling the defending champion Ph...

Not Just Another Plaque on the Wall Elijah McNally started rooting for the Yankees in 2004, when he was 6 years old. Back then, the Yankees were only a year removed from a World Series appearance, and another championship seemed just around the corner. Since then, Elijah had known nothing but seasons that ended with the Yankees falling short of winning a 27th World Series championship. On Wednesday night, he and his father, Chris, secured two seats in the right-field bleachers to see the Yankees end that dry spell.

In Postseason, There Is Only One Rivera All of the closers for the playoff teams have faltered except for Mariano Rivera, who for the fourth time in his career tossed the final pitch that carried the Yankees to a championship.
